Chance Kornuth among the leaders after Day 3 of the biggest World Series of Poker Main Event in history

The money bubble looms as the third day of a record-breaking 2023 World Series of Poker The $10,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event has come to an end. Now there are only 1,517 left from the largest attendance ever in the history of this event: 10,043 players. That means just ten more eliminations will see the remaining 1,507 contenders lock up at least $15,000 as they continue their quest for this year’s championship gold bracelet and the staggering $12,100,000 top win.
The chip leader is Antonio Mallol Heredia with 1,899,000. The Spanish player will be in a prime position to wipe out his previous high mark of $49,610 which he earned with a fourth-place finish in 2018 Los Angeles Poker Open $1,100 main event.
The second biggest stack on day 4 will belong to none other than the three-time bracelet winner and Poker World Tour champion Chance Kornuth. The 37-year-old poker pro banked 1,887,000 which put him within two big blinds of the lead.
Kornuth has been scorching hot this summer. He has cashed 11 times since early June, including five final tables and a title earned in a $2,200-per-month mystery bounty event. Wynn Summer Classic. His splurge saw him add more than $3.6 million to his career earnings, bringing his lifetime total to $16.1 million.
Kornuth also earned his first seven-figure payday during this stretch, placing fifth in the series’ $250,000 buy-in high roller bracelet event for $1,202,318. Besides Kornuth, there are a number of other notables who amassed seven-figure stacks by the end of day 3, including bracelet winner Pei Lei (1,742,000), Nicholas Rigby (1,719,000), bracelet winner Michael Banducci (1,469,000), two-time bracelet winner Chris Brewer (1,447,000), bracelet winner Jonathan Dimmig (1,446,000), bracelet winner Nikita Luther (1,294,000), bracelet winner David Moses (1,181,000 ), twice Poker World Tour champion James Carroll (1,164,000), bracelet winner Lok Chan (1,146,000), bracelet winner and two-time Card player Player of the Year winner Stephen Chidwick (1,106,000), two-time bracelet winner Jesse Lonis (1,100,000), bracelet winner Shota Nakanishi (1,072,000), three-time bracelet winner Yuri Dzivielevski (1,059,000), the all-time leader WSOP Circuit ring winner Maurice Hawkins (1,028,000) and bracelet winner Jason Somerville (1,027,000).
There are several previous main event champions still alive with a chance to repeat, including 2003 winner Chris Moneymaker (783,000), 2017 winner Scott Blumstein (618,000), 2009 winner Joe Cada (255,000), ten-time bracelet winner and two time main event champion Johnny Chan (367,000) and Jamie Gold (187,000), who won the previous biggest main event in history in 2006 when he outlasted a field of 8,773.
Day 3 kicked off with 3,538 players remaining, meaning more than 2,000 players saw their main event wrap up before the action wrapped up today. There were many notables who came out, including six-time bracelet winner Brian Hastings, four-time bracelet winner Anthony Zinno, six-time bracelet winner Shaun Deeb, four-time bracelet winner Mike Matusow, three-time bracelet winner David Bach and Tom Dwan. The final 1,517 players will return for Day 4 at noon on Monday July 10. Players will drop back to the blinds of 4,000-8,000 with an 8,000 big blind ante for level 16. The average stack of 397,218 will represent just under 50 big blinds when the cards return in the biggest main event ever.
